Abstract

The input hypothesis, proposed by Stephen Krashen, constitutes a foundational pillar of second language acquisition theory and has exerted a profound and enduring influence on foreign language pedagogy worldwide. This hypothesis is built upon four interrelated principles: the i+1 principle, which posits that learners acquire language most effectively when exposed to input slightly beyond their current proficiency level; the principle of effective language input, emphasizing the necessity of meaningful and contextually rich linguistic exposure; the acquisition principle, which distinguishes subconscious language acquisition from conscious learning; and the here and now principle, advocating for input that is situationally relevant and immediately comprehensible to learners. In recent years, the rapid advancement of digital and intelligent technologies has fundamentally transformed the landscape of language education, creating novel learning environments and presenting new demands for foreign language talent cultivation. Despite these shifts, the theoretical underpinnings of the input hypothesis remain remarkably pertinent and continue to offer valuable guidance for contemporary teaching practices. This article systematically reviews the core tenets of the input hypothesis and critically examines its implications for current foreign language teaching in China. By integrating an analysis of learners' acquisition strategies with the prevailing conditions of modern language instruction, this study elucidates the significant pedagogical insights that the input hypothesis provides. The findings underscore the continued relevance of comprehensible input in fostering effective language acquisition and offer practical recommendations for educators seeking to optimize instructional design in the digital era.
