Abstract

Edge computing introduces new security challenges for computer communication networks, particularly in enforcing consistent and adaptive network access control. Traditional centralized models struggle with latency, scalability, and context awareness when applied at the network edge. This paper proposes a distributed, policy-driven access control model specifically designed for heterogeneous edge environments. The model integrates dynamic trust assessment, real-time network state awareness, and lightweight policy enforcement agents deployed across edge nodes. It supports fine-grained authorization decisions based on device identity, behavioral patterns, environmental context, and service-level requirements. Through systematic design and controlled scenario-based evaluation, the model demonstrates improved responsiveness to transient threats, reduced control-plane overhead, and enhanced compatibility with resource-constrained edge infrastructure. The approach bridges the gap between rigorous security guarantees and operational feasibility in decentralized network architectures.
