A Literature Review of the Theme of Pride and Prejudice

Abstract

As one of the most celebrated literary works across the globe, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has drawn consistent critical attention from both Chinese and international researchers. Existing critical work explores its character portrayals, contextual backgrounds, plot arrangements and thematic layers. This literature review consolidates overseas and domestic critical discussions regarding the novel's core themes to offer an integrated overview of present‐day research. Counted among the most frequently studied canonical writings in English literary history, Pride and Prejudice delivers nuanced reflections on human nature, social conventions, romantic bonds and individuals' moral growth. This paper surveys worldwide critical conversations around its underlying themes and distinguishes four major research dimensions: moral awareness, gender‐inflected social identity, economic constraints shaped by social rank, and personal emotional maturation. By combining classic critical viewpoints and modern interdisciplinary analytical approaches, this paper traces how interpretations of the novel's themes have shifted over time. It also identifies persistent scholarly debates, existing research limitations, and promising directions for further study from cross‐cultural and contemporary perspectives.
