The sustainable competitiveness of private universities has become an increasingly important research topic due to intensified competition in higher education, demographic changes, and evolving educational demands. However, limited studies have explored the underlying mechanisms through which organizational resources and capabilities contribute to the long-term competitiveness of private universities, particularly in the context of China. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the sustainable competitiveness of Chinese private universities by developing a structural equation model grounded in the Resource-Based View, Dynamic Capability Theory, and Organizational Resilience Theory. A quantitative research approach was adopted, and data were collected from 426 respondents through a structured questionnaire survey. The proposed model examines the effects of four antecedent factors, including Faculty Resource Capability, Brand Reputation Capability, Governance Capability, and Innovation Capability, on Private University Competitiveness. Furthermore, Dynamic Capability and Organizational Resilience were introduced as mediating variables to explore the mechanisms through which organizational resources and capabilities are transformed into competitive advantages. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The findings reveal that Faculty Resource Capability and Brand Reputation Capability significantly enhance Dynamic Capability, while Governance Capability and Innovation Capability positively influence Organizational Resilience. Both Dynamic Capability and Organizational Resilience have significant positive effects on Private University Competitiveness, with Organizational Resilience demonstrating the strongest impact. Mediation analysis confirms that Dynamic Capability partially mediates the relationships between Faculty Resource Capability, Brand Reputation Capability, and competitiveness, while Organizational Resilience fully mediates the relationship between Governance Capability and competitiveness and partially mediates the effect of Innovation Capability. This study contributes to higher education management literature by integrating resource-based and capability-oriented perspectives to explain the formation mechanisms of private university competitiveness.References
