Under the national policy initiative to vigorously develop the nighttime economy, Hainan Province has actively implemented the Several Measures for Promoting Consumption in Hainan Province, with urban market spaces rapidly evolving into key platforms for deep cultural-tourism integration. Grounded in typological theory and employing a mixed-methods approach that combines systematic literature analysis, extensive field research, and in-depth case studies, this study comprehensively examines the typological framework and underlying design logic of urban market spaces across Hainan Province. The empirical findings reveal that these markets can be systematically categorized into four distinct types based on spatial location and functional attributes: characteristic street-based markets, historical-cultural site-oriented markets, commercial shopping center markets, and urban square markets. The analysis indicates that their spatial designs urgently require the organic integration of cultural narratives and immersive tourism experiences, while simultaneously enhancing functional versatility and sustainable resilience. Within the strategic context of the Hainan Free Trade Port policy framework, this study establishes a comprehensive four-dimensional strategic framework encompassing site selection planning, spatial development, design implementation, and management operations. This framework is rigorously validated through exemplary cases such as Haikous Qilou Old Street and Sanyas Luhuitou Trunk Market. These findings not only address a significant systemic gap in urban market design research but also provide replicable practical models for advancing Hainans Tourism Island and Health Island strategic vision, sustaining urban spatial vitality, and fostering high-quality development of street vending economies nationwide.References
