Total Physical Response (TPR) in English Language Teaching

Abstract

In the 1960s, American psychology professor James Asher first introduced the concept of the Total Physical Response (TPR) Approach, advocating for the inclusion of body movements in the language learning process. During the initial stages of learning a second language, learners observe and imitate the teacher's body movements, forming a cognitive understanding of the target language, which then internalizes into their comprehension abilities, ultimately leading to the natural production of language. Professor Asher and his colleagues conducted numerous teaching experiments, confirming that the TPR method aligned with the psychological development and learning patterns of children, making it highly practical for second language acquisition. Today, in second language classrooms, the TPR method has garnered significant attention due to its unique approach to classroom activities and its capacity to engage learners kinesthetically. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the historical background, theoretical foundations rooted in developmental psychology and neuroscience, and the effective implementation steps of the TPR Approach in contemporary classroom settings. Furthermore, it critically analyzes the pedagogical advantages, including enhanced learner motivation, reduced affective filters, and improved retention, alongside its limitations such as scalability challenges and suitability constraints for advanced proficiency levels. The study concludes with critical reflections and evidence-based recommendations for optimizing the application of TPR to promote its broader and more effective integration into second language classrooms worldwide.
